Casado com Maria Anes. Teve pelo menos duas filhas, a saber, Catarina Anes e Maria Anes. Fundou com a sua mulher a capela de São João Batista no Mosteiro do Carmo, em Lisboa. Recebeu, em 1453, o privilégio de sepultura perpétua no Mosteiro. A primeira referência a João Afonso, datada de 1451, surge na carta de compra de umas casas no beco de Martim Sapata que fez com a sua mulher. A última referência data de 1470 e encontra-se numa carta de conserto amigável acerca de uma contenda que envolveu as referidas casas. Já tinha falecido em 1502, data em que se fizeram as partilhas dos seus bens.
