Família originária da cidade de Colónia, no Sacro Império Romano-Germânico, instalando-se em Lisboa nos finais do século XV no contexto dos negócios mercantis e das boas relações que a Coroa Portuguesa cultivava com os mercadores alemães. Foram ascendendo na hierarquia da nobreza até alcançarem o estatuto de fidalgos da Casa d'el Rei, o que se deveu, em grande medida, à acumulação de rendimentos auferidos pela administração de diversos vínculos que lhes chegaram a partir dos matrimónios que negociaram.
