Filha de Diogo Fernandes Salema e Susana de Lemos. A primeira referência a Maria Salema, datada de 1591, surge na carta de partilhas dos bens que lhe couberam por morte de seu pai. A última referência data de 1598 e encontra-se no contrato de dote que a sua mãe celebrou com as freiras do Mosteiro de São Bernardo de Almoster para a meter freira no Mosteiro.
