Filho de Gonçalo Fernandes Sobrinho e Inês Figueira. Casado com Susana de Lemos. Teve pelo menos cinco filhos, a saber, Diogo Fernandes Salema, que sucedeu, Brás Salema, Gonçalo Salema, Maria Salema e Rui Gomes. Tesoureiro mor do Reino. A primeira referência a Diogo Fernandes Salema, datada de 1574, surge numa carta régia de sentença acerca de umas casas que herdou dos seus pais. A última referência data de 1590 e encontra-se numa carta de quitação do cumprimento do testamento da sua irmã, Maria Botelha, que instituiu capela no Mosteiro de São Francisco de Lisboa. As partilhas dos bens que ficaram por sua morte fizeram-se em 1591.
