Filho de Diogo Gonçalves Salema e Catarina Botelho. Casado com Isabel Serrão. Teve pelo menos quatro filhos, a saber, João Salema, que sucedeu, Diogo Salema, Joana Rebela e Catarina Botelha. Fidalgo da Casa d’el Rei e cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo. Foi mercador e investiu no negócio de vinho e cereais, sobretudo em S. Jorge da Mina e no Brasil, chegando a obter o lugar de morador da Mina. Língua e aposentador-mor de Ormuz. A primeira referência a Brás Salema, datada de 1544, encontra-se na descrição no “Inventário geral dos papéis...” de uma carta de autorização de renúncia ao ofício de língua e aposentador-mor de Ormuz. Faz testamento e falece em 1562, instituindo um morgadio ao qual vinculou a herdade do Gradil.
